Once Upon a Time

CREATED BY

DESCRIPTION

Years ago, we spent summers on a Black Sea beach that was part of a former military zone, and very few people knew of its existence. Golden sand, turquoise water, cool forest nearby. In such a place, someone, millennia ago, probably invented the concept of heaven.

Today, the site is protected by law as a habitat for rare species of plants and animals. A group of activists continues to fight for its preservation. However, the area became famous, began to fill with people, and resembled any other popular site.

Walk With Me

I took this photo a few years ago during a kitesurfing demonstration. All the spectators watched with interest what was happening, and no one noticed scenes like this, which was a counterpoint to everything happening around us.

A few years ago, at the invitation of my friends, I finally had the opportunity to take a long-awaited trip to South Africa. The month-long journey left a lasting impression on my mind and heart. In this country, I discovered the true meaning of “beauty” and “diversity” in all their forms.

On the Edge of Space

This work is of special significance to me. I love the story of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The movie’s plot unfolds around a single shot that had to become the cover of the last issue of an iconic magazine (Sean Penn plays the photographer). If you have watched the movie, you could understand my excitement after I learned that this work of mine was chosen for the cover of the last issue of a Australasian Science magazine that had been published for 80 years and for a long period of time its publisher was the Australian Academy of sciences.

This particular fact – that this magazine was scientific – brings added value to me. I deeply respect the work of the people that dedicated their intelligence and labor to science. These days, when our civilization establishes its presence in space, the leading role of science for human progress and prosperity is overlooked in specific circles. What better occasion than that to remind how and thanks to whom we have come to the edge of space at a moment when the term metaverse is gaining buzz and this idea is seen as the next big thing in front of the networked society?

“Australasian Science was Australia’s longest-running scientific publication. It was first published in 1938 as The Australian Journal of Science by the Australian National Research Council, which was the forerunner of the Australian Academy of Science. In 1954 the journal was transferred to ANZAAS – the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science”

About Me

My name is Ventsislav Bratovanov. I do photography, visual design and digital art.

As a child, I followed my father and his passion for photography everywhere. When I turned 11 I got my first camera of my own. That same year, I enrolled in the school photography club.
From then to now, I have gone through many challenges and my life path has been generous with lessons. Many were not directly related to photography but influenced my understanding of this art.
This is how I learned that each person is a visualization of their own experience. Sometimes light prevails, sometimes shadows, and sometimes darkness, but these shots are never static, boring, and predictable.

I define myself as a futurist because, for a long time, I have been explicitly interested in the many possible ways for the development or the regress of our civilization. I am curious about the scenarios – from the most dystopian to the too optimistic ones – that could unfold from the different challenges in front of us and what solutions could push us in a more positive direction.

I am a collector in a broader sense as one of my favorite aspects of this passion is the collection of stories – both nonfiction and fictional. I am interested in the traits of the characters involved in them. I feel excited about the potential for the build-up and deepening of the worlds formed around every story.

I see video games as a journey that expands our horizons and gives us experience points we can’t get in real life. I play slowly and take extra time to enjoy the story, level design, music, gameplay, and everything else that makes a good game such an intense and fulfilling experience. In my opinion, these characteristics put me in the Explorer category in the Bartle Player Taxonomy developed by Richard Bartle in 1996.
